The project is located within Vine Court which is discretely accessed and set back from Whitechapel Road High Street in East London. The scheme replaces a low quality and under-utilised single storey commercial shed with a stepped 3 - 5 storey new-build providing commercial space at street level and flats above, with a mix of typologies. Within a densely built urban environment, the layout and stepped massing have been carefully considered within the townscape and to ensure minimal impact on neighbouring amenities. The new scheme infills the currently disrupted townscape with a stepped volume which complements and mediates between the surrounding massing. At the centre of the site, a courtyard is proposed to provide a safe and lively open space within an area undergoing extensive regeneration.
